The Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards recognize the accomplishments of student organizations, student organization leaders, student organization advisors, and campus partners.

The Spring 2017 Awards celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 5:30 PM in the Main Lounge of the IMU. Doors will open at 5:00 PM. Dress is Business Casual and light refreshments will be served; the program will begin promptly at 5:30 PM.

All Hawkeye  Award applications/nominations (including any supporting materials) are due on Monday, March 27, 2017 at  12:00 PM/Noon, but we will gladly accept nominations now up until the deadline. No applications/nominations will be accepted after the deadline.  No Exceptions!

During the Awards celebration, the Meet the Challenge and Be Better @ Iowa award winners will also be announced!! More information about these two award categories is available below.

Meet the Challenge Awards

The purpose of these awards is to recognize students who exemplify the values promoted within The IOWA Challenge through their actions within the University of Iowa and surrounding communities. The winners of the Meet the Challenge Awards will be announced at the Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards celebration on May 3, 2017.  For more detailed information and to nominate/apply, please go to the nomination form.  Application deadline: March 27, 2017 at 4:00 pm.


 Discovering My Strengths Award

First-year students who participated in one of the Be Better @ Iowa High Impact experiences are eligible to submit their application for the Discovering My Strengths Award. The Discovering My Strengths Award recognizes undergraduate students who have intentionally engaged in discovering and utilizing their Top 5 Strengths in their very first year at Iowa. The winners of the Discovering My Strengths Award will be announced at the Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards celebration on May 3, 2017. Leadership Legacy

Criteria: The successful student for this award will have made a lasting, significant contribution to their organization and/or the University of Iowa community. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Significant contribution to the success of the organization through providing a lasting impact on the organization in the implementation of a new and successful program/event, strengthening and improving of existing program(s)/event(s), and/or execution of new initiatives. 
    • Collaboration with others in the successful implementation of programs, events, initiatives, etc. that will leave a lasting impact on the organization and/or the University of Iowa community. 
    • Provided exemplary leadership and commitment to the organization and/or the University of Iowa by mentoring future leaders and leaving a lasting impression on those served.

Most Improved Student Organization

Criteria: The successful organization for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the organization and therefore exhibited considerable progress in the development of the group. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Revitalized membership (by improving recruitment and retention of new and diverse members) 
    • Improved focus on the organization’s mission and internal operation 
    • Creation or improvement of program(s)/event(s) 
    • Intentional collaboration with other student organizations or University departments 
    • Established a plan to ensure continued organizational growth and sustainability of the organization.

Most Promising New Student Organization

Criteria: The successful organization for this award (founded/registered after March 28, 2016) will have demonstrated significant motivation, creativity, innovation, and perseverance. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Successful recruitment of members 
    • Created new, interesting, and well-attended programs and events
    • Provided new opportunities for students to participate in the community
    • Collaborated with other student organizations or University departments
    • Established a plan to transition future leaders to ensure continued organizational growth.

Outstanding Community Partner*

Criteria: For this award, the successful community partner should have displayed significant effort, made a meaningful contribution, and have supported University of Iowa students. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Working in collaboration with a student organization to enhance its mission, vision, or goals. 
    • Provided support in programming or event planning. 
    • Provided human (volunteers) or financial resources to develop successful programming.

Outstanding Contribution to the Greater Community (Student Leader)

Criteria:The successful student for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the greater community outside of the University of Iowa campus. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Displayed outstanding academic achievement, inspired and motivated others to act through service and exemplified integrity in all words and actions. 
    • Provided exemplary service, commitment, and strong leadership to the greater community (outside of the University of Iowa campus) and was committed to working with and for others. 
    • Made a meaningful contribution to students and the surrounding communities through service. 
    • Identified an existing problem and demonstrated initiative by seeking ways to address that problem through service. 
    • Demonstrated on-going flexibility, creativity, and perseverance in efforts.

    • Committed to working with and for others in making an impact outside the University of Iowa. 
    • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and perseverance in seeking ways to challenge the present and enrich the future.

Outstanding Diversity Awareness Program

Criteria: The successful program/event for this award should have focused on campus diversity or diversity issues, and encouraged acceptance and respect. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Program provided the University of Iowa community with an educational or entertaining program/event focused on diverse views, backgrounds, or experiences, or increased the awareness of diversity issues. 
    • Program promoted and reflected the values of social justice, multiculturalism, and/or diversity. 
    • This award will be presented to an organization that coordinated and managed a fiscally sound, well-planned diversity awareness program open to all University students.

Outstanding Program 

Criteria: The successful program/event for this award should have made a meaningful contribution to the University of Iowa community. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Program enhanced the University of Iowa community and institutional values of diversity, integrity, and initiative by utilizing a creative and unique approach. 
    • Explored and fostered innovative and efficient ways of reaching and involving diverse student audiences. 
    • This award will be presented to an organization that coordinated and managed a fiscally sound, well-planned program open to all University students.

Outstanding Student Organization 

Criteria: The successful organization for this award will have displayed significant effort and have made a meaningful contribution to the University of Iowa students. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Leaders and members participated in development opportunities (i.e. Student Org. Leadership Institute (SOLI), Leadershape Iowa, Student Org. and/or Leadership Development Series, My Iowa, etc.)
    • Offered development programming to members on a consistent basis.
    • Demonstrated consistent flexibility, initiative, creativity, and perseverance. 
    • Attracted members from different backgrounds, life experiences, and diverse perspectives. 
    • Worked in collaboration with other organizations to enhance organization’s goals. 
    • Exemplified integrity in all areas of the organization. 
    • Developed a responsible transition plan for the continued success of the organization.

Outstanding Student Organization Advisor 

Criteria: The successful advisor* for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the organization and therefore exhibited considerable progress in the development of the group. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Allowed students to take responsibility for their own learning and understanding of the organization while providing advice, encouragement, and support to all University students. 
    • Conveyed values of integrity and respect. Related well to individual students. 
    • Made himself/herself available to others, and was approachable and open to new ideas. 
    • Valued initiative and student input. 
    • Utilized different and creative approaches to educating and assisting members. 
    • Served as a positive role model. 
    • Helped organization reach its goals. 

*CSIL staff are ineligible to win this award, though they can be nominated.

Outstanding Student Organization Collaboration 

Criteria: The recipient of this award should have made meaningful contributions to the University of Iowa community through collaborative efforts (either throughout the year or a single successful program). This could be shown through the following: 

    • Demonstrating the collaborative spirit through work with numerous organizations or a one-time collaborative effort between two or more organizations. 
    • Programming that enhanced the University of Iowa community and institutional values of collaboration and initiative by utilizing a creative and unique approach. 
    • Explored and fostered innovative and efficient ways of reaching and involving diverse student audiences, while integrating the purpose of all organizations involved. 
    • This award will be presented to the organization(s) that has strived to collaborate to coordinate and manage fiscally sound, well-planned programs.

Criteria: The successful student for this award will have displayed significant effort for their student organization. This could be demonstrated through the following:

    • Provided exemplary service, commitment, and strong leadership to The University of Iowa community and demonstrated on-going flexibility, creativity, and perseverance in efforts.

    • Was willing to address existing problems and valued feedback from others. 
    • Made herself/himself available to group members and brought out strengths and talents of individual group members.

    • Helped their organization be more operationally and educationally sustainable; valued diversity; motivated and inspired others to be sustainable
    • Consistently and persistently advocated for sustainable initiatives on campus, and actively supported environmental student organizations' initiatives
    • Collaborated with other organizations and departments to come up with innovative sustainability solutions
    • Demonstrated initiative by seeking ways to get closer to the UI's 2020 Vision/Sustainability Targets

Criteria: The successful organization* for this award will have displayed significant effort for the improvement of the UI campus through philanthropy between March 28, 2016 and March 26, 2017.  This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • For the purpose of this award, "philanthropy" is defined as fundraising for the UI campus.
  • Inspired and motivated others to act philanthropically, and exemplified leadership and integrity in all words and actions.
  • Made a meaningful contribution to the University of Iowa through philanthropy.
  • Identified an existing problem and demonstrated initiative by seeking ways to address that problem through philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated on-going flexibility, creativity, and perseverance in efforts.

Sustainability Innovation & Awareness

Criteria: The successful organization* or program/event* for this award should have displayed significant effort through sustainability education, implementation, and awareness initiatives providing a meaningful contribution the UI's 2020 Vision/Sustainability Targets and an environmentally conscious, campus community. This could be demonstrated through the following:

    • Organization or program/event demonstrated a cultural impact through a change in attitudes or behaviors; and/or it supported disadvantaged or under-served populations
    • Made a positive impact on the environment
    • Demonstrated a positive economic impact
    • Demonstrated potential to be transferable and continue over time
    • Collaborated with the Office of Sustainability and the UISG Sustainability Committee
    • Utilized UISG's Green Initiatives Fund and/or made environmentally ethical/responsible purchases

Sustainability Integration

Criteria:  The successful organization* for this award should have integrated sustainability initiatives via the operation of an event(s)/project(s), providing a meaningful contribution the UI's 2020 Vision/Sustainability Targets and an environmentally conscious campus community. This could be demonstrated through the following:

    • Collaborated with the Office of Sustainability and the UISG Sustainability Committee
    • Utilized UISG's Green Initiatives Fund and/or made environmentally ethical/responsible purchases
    • Provided waste diversion-recycling and composting at events
    • Communicated educational messaging and awareness of sustainability initiatives

Unsung Hero 

Criteria: The successful student for this award will have demonstrated a significant contribution to their organization, without holding a leadership position. This could be demonstrated through the following: 

    • Provided leadership to the organization through action not position. 
    • Served as a role model and exerted a positive influence on his/her peers through unexpected leadership. 
    • Demonstrated initiative and encouraged participation in the organization. 
    • Made a meaningful contribution to students and/or the organization.
